In 1009, Wolmirstedt Castle, originally conceived as an imperial castle, was first documented. It strategically served to secure access to the Altmark region.

History+

The first documented mention of the complex dates back to 1009, when it was an imperial castle enfeoffed to the Counts of Walbeck. In the 12th century, it became the property of the Margraves of Brandenburg. Its location at the former confluence of the Elbe and Ohre rivers was crucial for securing the northern Altmark, especially during conflicts with the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. Margrave Albrecht II had the complex expanded in stone in 1208. Due to financial difficulties, Margrave Waldemar sold the castle to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in 1316, which used it as a residence from 1342. Under Ernst II of Wettin, the castle was converted into a palace in 1480.
