Worb Castle

It was built for the Barons of Worb, first mentioned around 1130. In 1146, Duke Konrad I of Zähringen held court at their manor. From them, the castle passed to Johann von Kien in 1329 and, after his death in 1352, to the von Diesbach family, who became particularly known through Niklaus von Diesbach (1430-1475). A new castle was built after a fire in 1535.

At the end of the 16th century, the Lordship of Worb belonged to three co-owners and was subsequently further divided until Christoph von Graffenried (1603-1687) was able to reunite all parts in 1668. His nephew was Christoph von Graffenried (1661-1743), the founder of the colony of New Bern in North Carolina. The lordship remained in the possession of the von Graffenried family until 1792, after which an inheritance community sold it to Johann Rudolf von Sinner. After several changes of ownership, the castle is still in private hands today.

The baroque residential building from the 17th century houses a collection of rural glass, and the bel étage features rooms with painted linen wallpapers.

Next to the old castle, the New Worb Castle was built in Rococo style after 1743.
