In the Saxon town of Wurzen stands Wurzen Castle, a late Gothic structure with early Renaissance elements. It once served as a bishop's residence and today houses a hotel and restaurant.

History+

The construction of Wurzen Castle took place between 1491 and 1497 under Bishop Johann VI von Saalhausen, who commissioned it as a new episcopal seat. The massive rectangular building, surrounded by a dry moat with a drawbridge, marks the transition from a medieval fortress to a late Gothic castle. It served as the residence for the Bishops of Meissen until 1581, when the last bishop, Johann IX von Haugwitz, abdicated.
