Wyden Castle

The origins of Wyden Castle date back to the 13th century, when the oldest part, a defensive tower, was built. It initially served the Habsburg ministerialis family of Widen. After their era, ownership passed to various Schaffhausen patricians. In the 15th century, Hans I. von Griessheim was lord of the castle who participated in the conflicts of the Old Zurich War. Between 1650 and 1798, the castle served as the official residence of the Winterthur bailiff. In the summer of 1880, a congress of German socialists took place here, as political gatherings in Germany were prohibited at that time by the Anti-Socialist Laws.
