The castle was built on the estate under the rule of the von Byem family from 1842 - 1845. After the expropriation in 1945, it served as accommodation for residents of Zabakuck; from 1948 to 1956, the school, a restaurant, and the kindergarten moved in here. In 1973, the construction of the first animal enclosure began in the castle's park. From 1974, the enclosure was officially named a zoo and has been rebuilt and expanded to this day.

Since 1998, Elbe-Havel-Werkstätten gGmbH has been the new owner of the castle, park, and zoo. The castle has been reconstructed and modernized and now shines in new, old beauty. Thanks to the modernization of its interior, it offers living and working opportunities for people with disabilities who have found their center of life in the Elbe-Havel-Werkstätten.
