Zarghof Castle

The first documented mention of Zarghof occurred in 1379 under the name “Sarg,” followed by “Czarig” in 1405. Around 1450, the property belonged to a Peter Harwekch, who sold it in 1452 to Hainrich Viechtenstainer. A few years later, in 1456, Andreas Viechtenstainer was the owner. Zarghof was a fief of the Wallseer family and later came into the possession of Heinrich Herleinsperger, who inherited the nearby Lichtenau Castle in 1621. In 1620, Herleinsperger had Zarghof converted into a widow's residence for his wife Praxedis von Oedt, a function it maintained until 1682 for Sabine Schifer, née von Oedt. Locally, Zarghof is still known as the “Widow's Manor.” Later, the widow's residence was moved to the north wing of Lichtenau Castle. When the Sprinzensteiner family became the owners of Lichtenau in 1656, Zarghof served as the residence for the administrator.
