Zedtlitz Castle

Zedtlitz Castle, Wyraaue 6, is a castle built in 1706 in the Wyhra floodplains of Zedtlitz near Borna.

A moated castle in "Cedelice" was first mentioned in 1190. The owners were Heinrich and Otto von Zedlitz, who were named in a Naumburg deed of gift in 1191. In 1303, a Castrum in Zedtlitz was mentioned. The Lords of Zedlitz were followed from the mid-15th century by the von Wolkaw family, from 1498–1558 by the von Neustadt family, from 1590 again by the von Wolkaw family, and from 1611–1685 by the von Draschwitz family. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle burned down.

In 1692, the von Gladebeck family became the owner of the ruin. In 1706, Christiane Elisabeth von Gladebeck, née von Münchhausen (1650–1718), the second wife and widow of the Prussian War Councillor Bodo von Gladebeck, had the castle rebuilt in contemporary Baroque style. After her death, the castle came into the Aus dem Winkel family through the marriage of her daughter Christine Lucie. They sold it in 1782 to the Dresden court councillor Jacob Heinrich Reinhold. His great-niece Julie, married von Metzradt, gifted the castle to her son Jacob Friedrich Rudolph von Metzradt in 1836. In 1840, the composer Albert Lortzing is said to have found inspiration for his opera "Der Wildschütz" during a visit to the castle. Before 1905, the property came into the von Rex family through marriage.

In the course of the land reform of 1945/1946, Rudolf Karl Max von Rex was dispossessed and expelled by the communists. The municipality of Zedtlitz took over the castle and used it, among other things, as a kindergarten.

After the reunification, the roof was renewed and the outbuildings were put to use. The castle itself changed owners several times; on June 5, 2015, it was auctioned again for €146,000.
