Zeil Castle

On the site of the present castle, a small fortress built by the Truchsessen of Waldburg stood in the Middle Ages. This earlier structure was demolished in 1598 to make way for the current building. Between 1599 and 1614, the four-winged Renaissance castle was constructed under Truchsess Froben von Waldburg-Zeil. Even before the castle's construction, he had a church and a house monastery built. The original Renaissance garden was redesigned several times, in the Baroque, 19th, and 20th centuries, before being restored to the Renaissance style from the 1930s onwards. A fountain by Maximilian Rueß, created between 1982 and 1989, adorns the inner courtyard.
