Castle Ziegersberg

The then owner of the Ziegersberg estate, Dr. Jakob Singer, had a modern castle built about 700 m from the old castle ruins in 1896/97 by the Viennese master builder Dr. Franz Schönthaler. Baroque French garden palaces obviously served as a model. To obtain cheap building material, large parts of the surrounding wall of Ziegersberg Castle were demolished. Singer owned the building until 1917, when it passed into the ownership of Hilda Brunner. The Ziegersberg estate was "Aryanized" in 1940 and came into the possession of Dr. Carlos Wetzell. After the Second World War, it was returned to the previous owner. The Brunner family is still the owner of the castle, which serves them as a summer residence and the seat of the estate administration.

The neo-baroque Ziegersberg Castle is located on the eastern edge of the village of Schlag on the gently sloping hillside of the Waldbauernriegel. The pretty, mostly single-story building is a symmetrical complex consisting of a longitudinal wing and two attached side wings, which form an almost square courtyard at the rear. Both the projecting, pavilion-like, two-story central wing and the two corner buildings are covered with mansard roofs. Due to the staggered roofscape, the building has a lively silhouette on its show side. On the west-facing broad side of the central part there is a high round-arched portal, from which an open staircase leads into the garden. The sloping sides on the ground floor are equipped with high round-arched windows. Through alterations in 1941, a large hall was created inside, which incorporates the garden and the surrounding landscape through these large windows.
