Zigguln Castle

The name Zikullen was first documented in 1496, derived from a medieval clearing tool. In 1547, Zigguln was recorded as a small farm owned by Adam Hofstetter. Through the marriage of his daughter Ursula to the Klagenfurt master builder Christoph Windisch, the estate came into his possession in 1589. Following the emigration of Windisch's daughter Regina, who had inherited Zigguln, during the Counter-Reformation, ownership passed to a tradesman named Lebmacher. In the first half of the 17th century, it was expanded into a country castle. In 1633, the Jesuit Order acquired the estate and used it as a student dormitory and recreation area for the Jesuit school. After the order's dissolution in 1773, the castle became state property. Maria Theresia initially leased it to a military orphanage and later gifted it to this institution.
