Zizenhausen Castle

The first documented mention of the village of Zizenhausen dates back to the mid-15th century. Until 1780, the settlement consisted only of a farm, a mill, a brickworks, and an ironworks established in 1697. A manorial seat was only established here towards the end of the 18th century. In 1781, Carl Anton von Krafft, bailiff and district judge of the Anterior Austrian Landgraviate of Nellenburg, acquired the Zizenhausen farm. He had the castle built from 1785 onwards and influenced the industrialization and population growth of the village. The castle remained in the possession of the von Krafft family until 1840, when it was sold to the Barons von Buol-Berenberg from Mühlingen. Although the family continued to manage the estate, the castle was subsequently used only as a summer residence. In 1936, it was finally sold and has since served as the town hall.
