Zuschendorf Castle

The origins of Zuschendorf Castle lie in an 11th-century castle that evolved into a knight's estate. In 1403, Margrave Wilhelm I enfeoffed this estate to Kunigunde von Carlowitz. The von Carlowitz family established Zuschendorf as their oldest ancestral seat and held it until 1695. Hans von Carlowitz had the two-winged Renaissance castle built in 1553 and the adjacent hall church in 1560. The latter was rebuilt between 1680 and 1682 and received direct access from the castle to the lord's gallery. After the sale by the von Carlowitz family in 1695, ownership changed frequently, leading to alterations of the castle. During the Seven Years' War, the estate suffered damage, and the Wars of Liberation also contributed to a decline. After 1945, the owners were dispossessed, and during the GDR era, the complex served various purposes, including a kindergarten and a warehouse. It was not until 1988 that the impending demolition was averted by its acquisition by VEG Saatzucht.
