West of Augsburg, in Zusmarshausen, stands Zusmarshausen Castle. This building, once an administrative seat of the Augsburg prince-bishops, is now a three-story building with a hip roof.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to 1505. Under Prince-Bishop Heinrich IV von Lichtenau, it was built as the seat of the episcopal administrative office of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg. The castle, which remained in the possession of the bishops until secularization, underwent alterations and extensions with outbuildings. Eleven bishops served as lords of the castle here.
