Zweibrücken Castle

The origins of the current castle date back to the 12th century, when the Counts of Zweibrücken erected a castle on this site to protect a trade route. In the 15th century, Zweibrücken became the residence of the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. The area underwent expansions in the 16th and 17th centuries under the Wittelsbach dukes. After its destruction in the Dutch War in 1677, Duke Gustav Samuel had the residential palace built in its current form between 1720 and 1725 by master builder Jonas Erikson Sundahl. This new palace served representative purposes and no longer for defense. On May 3, 1793, it was plundered by revolutionary troops and remained a ruin for 25 years.
