Zweibrüggen Castle

Zweibrüggen Castle is a former moated castle in the Wurm Valley on the connecting road from Übach-Palenberg to Frelenberg.

Haus Zweibrüggen was the seat of a noble family of the same name. In 1397, a Leynart von Zweibrücken was documented. In 1457, Heinrich von Zweibrüggen was the owner of the moated castle. He was also mentioned in 1486 as the last of his lineage.

Dietrich von der Hagen, married to Heinrich von Zweibrüggen's daughter, inherited the estate in 1486. He was succeeded as owner by his son-in-law Nikolaus von Mirbach. After his death in 1552, his sons Johann and Wilhelm von Mirbach divided the property. In 1605, Wilhelm von Mirbach's son, Nikolaus, became the owner of Zweibrüggen. Already in 1648, the owner changed again: Hermann von Mirbach was now enfeoffed with Zweibrüggen. He was succeeded in 1676 by his son-in-law Hans Wilhelm von Voß.

Zweibrüggen remained in the possession of the von Voß family until 1697. In 1697, Wilhelm Adolf von Eys, known as Beusdahl, who was married to Katharina von Eys, became the owner of Zweibrüggen. In 1727, Johann Franz Freiherr von Eys, known as Beusdahl, was enfeoffed with Zweibrüggen. After his death in 1786, the property fell to the bailiff of Aldenhoven, Joseph Anton von Negri, who was married to Johann Franz von Eys's daughter.

The von Negri family remained the owners of Zweibrüggen Castle until 1993. In the following years, the estate was extensively renovated with funding and is now owned by the city of Übach-Palenberg.
