Zwickledt Castle

Zwickledt Castle is located about 2.5 km east of Wernstein am Inn in Upper Austria, near the state road 506 leading to Schärding.

Only sparse historical data is available about the castle or the Zwickledt manor. Based on its first mention, it can be assumed that it belonged to the Neuburg dominion. In 1576, Count Julius von Salm und Neuburg am Inn gifted the small castle, along with ten associated houses, to his administrator Leonhard Schmelzing. In the same year, Emperor Maximilian II elevated Leonhard and his brother Bernhard to the nobility, with the family being granted the noble predicate "von Wernstein" in 1645. The von Schmelzing family remained owners of Zwickledt until 1852. After that, ownership changed relatively quickly: On June 13, 1882, the property passed to Ludwig and Rosa Völkl. They were followed in 1858 by Josef Tornton, in 1872 by Josef and Maria Poth, in 1873 by Josef Klammer, in 1875 by Moriz Hoch, in 1894 by Armand Hoch, in 1900 by Eduard Freiherr von Müller-Hörnstein, and in 1905 by Georg Matzinger. In 1906, the small castle was acquired by Alfred Kubin and Hedwig Kubin, both of whom lived there until their deaths in 1948 (Hedwig) and 1959 (Alfred) respectively.
