Hetterscheidt Castle

The origins of Hetterscheidt date back to 847, when it was mentioned as Hetratescethe and was one of the main estates of Werden Abbey. As a fortified building, it was mentioned in the abbey's account books in 1364/65 in connection with the construction of walls and gates. The complex, consisting of an upper house and an economic building, was granted as a fief and served the abbots as a summer residence at times. A chapel is documented for the year 1525. In 1587, the complex was destroyed during the Spanish Winter but was rebuilt by Abbot Hugo Preuteus and surrounded by a wall. Historical depictions of the castle's exact appearance vary, showing a moated castle with a gabled house and a square tower, or even two towers of different heights. From the 18th century onwards, the complex began to decay.
