In Sonneborn, Thuringia, are the remains of Schieferschloss, a once significant lowland castle in the Nessetal valley. Today, only modest remnants of the original complex survive.

History+

Around the year 1100, a castle was built in Sonneborn. Located as a lowland castle in a hollow within the village, it was protected by a moat. The Nessetal valley, where the castle stood, was an important route for military and royal purposes in the High Middle Ages. In 1137, a knight named Boppo Julius von Sonneborn is documented as serving the Fulda monastery. The Lords of Wangenheim acquired the castle and its associated estates in 1370.
