Alt-Wartenburg Castle

The Wartenburg dominion, first documented in 1128, was owned by the Lords of Pollheim for over three centuries. A member of this family was Wolfgang von Polheim, who founded the first Paulaner monastery in the German-speaking world in Oberthalheim in the late 15th century. His son Cyriak and his descendants embraced the Reformation. During the Counter-Reformation, Ludwig von Pollheim sold the dominion around 1640 to the Catholic Tobias Nütz von Goisernburg, who succeeded in converting the fief into free property. Nütz had a new castle built on a hill near the old castle, partly using demolition material from the old castle. After a fire in 1678, the castle was rebuilt in 1689/90.
