Eksjöhovgård Castle (Ruin)
The castle ruin Eksjöhovgård presents itself as a picturesque remnant of a once significant complex. It is located on an island in the northern part of Eksjöhovgårdssjö in the Swedish municipality of Sävsjö and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The ruin is a testament to a long history dating back to the Middle Ages.
History+
The first mention of the area around Eksjöhovgård dates back to 1287. In the 14th century, the site served as a meeting place for the Thing, a local court. Between 1420 and 1616, the estate was owned by the Sture family. A document from 1505 confirms that a building already existed at that time. After the Stures, the property passed to Field Marshal Carl Mauritz Lewenhaupt, who had a three-story stone house built. A map from 1685 shows the island with this structure. In 1700, Fabian Wrede acquired the estate, with a protocol describing a three-story stone house at the far end of the island. Magnus Julius de la Gardie, a later owner, had the top floor demolished and the entrance relocated in the 1730s. Around 1805, the castle began to decay, and in 1812, the copper roof was removed. After a long period of decline, the ruin was first restored in 1934, with further measures following in the 1960s and 1980s.
