Hertefeld Castle

To be privately owned

The Hertefeld Castle Ruin in Weeze, North Rhine-Westphalia, was originally a 14th-century knight's seat and now combines historical building fabric with extensive parkland.

History+

The first documented mention of Hertefeld House as a knight's seat occurred in 1322, although the Hertefeld family likely resided there earlier. In the 14th century, Hertefeld formed the center of an independent lordship, which later passed into the possession of the County of Kleve. After several changes of ownership within the Hertefeld family, the property was reunited in the 17th century by Jobst Gerhard von Hertefeld zum Kolk. The family acquired extensive lands and maintained close ties with the Brandenburg Elector.
