Lüchow Castle

The Lüchow Amtsturm was built as a corner bastion of a four-winged castle in the second half of the 15th century, commissioned by Anna von Nassau, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It was the seat of the Amtmann (bailiff) of Lüchow. When a devastating fire destroyed large parts of Lüchow in 1811, only the tower of the castle remained. This proud structure stands 22 meters high from the top edge of the cellar to the outer walkway. From here, a wonderful view over Lüchow and its surroundings is offered. Above the walkway, there was originally a tower extension about 12 m high, which was topped by a 5 m high roof hood. Neither of these could be preserved. The walls of the Amtsturm are up to 3.5 m thick. It served as a defensive structure, residence, and prison.
