Putzar Castle

Putzar's earliest mention dates back to 1306, when Dukes Otto I of Pomerania and Heinrich II of Mecklenburg agreed that only a fortified house should be built at this border location. It is unclear whether the Ulrichsbau, begun around 1545 by the Pomeranian Grand Chamberlain Ulrich von Schwerin, was erected on these foundations. After Ulrich's death, his sons Joachim and Ludolf inherited the estate. Between 1577 and 1580, Joachim von Schwerin had the two-story Joachimsbau built in close proximity. This building was inhabited and remodeled several times after the Ludolf line died out, while the Ulrichsbau progressively decayed. In 1753, a third floor was added to the Joachimsbau. In 1785, a tenant had the upper floor of the Ulrichsbau removed, presumably for building materials.
