Schottenkloster St. Jakob, Regensburg

The monastery in Regensburg was founded between 1060 and 1075, when the Irish monk Marianus Scottus and his companions were granted the small church of Weih-Sankt-Peter. This provisional settlement soon became too small, leading to the construction of a new, larger monastery around 1090 with the support of Burgrave Otto of Regensburg and respected citizens. From Regensburg, a network of monasteries developed across the European continent, inhabited by Irish Benedictine monks, and led by the abbot of Regensburg since the early 13th century. Following the decline of many of these monasteries during the Reformation, the sites in Regensburg, Erfurt, and Würzburg were repopulated by Scottish Benedictines from 1515/16 onwards. For the next three centuries, the Regensburg monastery served as a training center for Scottish priests. Due to its special international connections and extraterritorial status, the monastery escaped the secularization of 1803. It was not until 1862 that the monastery was dissolved at the insistence of the Bishop of Regensburg and by order of Pope Pius IX, due to a shortage of personnel, and handed over to the Diocese of Regensburg. After renovation work between 1866 and 1872, the diocesan seminary moved into the former monastery buildings.

The former Scots Monastery of St. James is located in the city of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany.

Since 1872, the former convent buildings have been used as a Catholic seminary. The associated monastery church is known for its Romanesque north portal with its portal figures.
