Schwesternhaus Mariental, genannt Niesing, Münster

The monastery was founded in 1444 by Sisters of the Common Life, who came from Schüttorf. Initially located in the parish of St. Ludgeri, the first site soon proved too small. An inheritance allowed for the acquisition of new land near St. Servatii, where the actual monastery buildings and church were constructed between 1451 and 1458. The community followed the Rule of Saint Augustine, and its constitution was established in 1463/67. The monastery experienced rapid growth, counting 99 sisters by the end of the 15th century. It also played a role in the founding of the Agnetenberg monastery in Dülmen. However, its initial period of prosperity ended with the plague in 1506/07. During the Reformation and the Anabaptist Kingdom, the monastery came into conflict with the city's guilds due to its weaving activities. In 1525, a citizen uprising threatened, and in 1534, the Anabaptists demanded the sisters' baptism and the abandonment of the monastery. The sisters refused, were forced to leave Münster, and the monastery's artworks fell victim to iconoclasm and looting. After the Anabaptist Kingdom's collapse, the sisters returned and rebuilt the monastery by 1540. Following a period of decline around 1600, the monastery experienced a new flourishing, with the convent comprising 43 sisters by around 1710. The buildings were reconstructed in the Baroque style in 1635, and later, a hospital wing (1729) and another wing housing a girls' school (1786) were added. Secularization led to the monastery's dissolution in 1810, after parts had already been seized by the military in 1794 and the admission of novices prohibited in 1803. From 1820, the buildings served as residences for Prussian military personnel, and the tower of the monastery church was demolished in 1822.

The Sisters' House Mariental is situated in the city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 67 meters above sea level.

The former monastery buildings were reconsecrated in 1905 and are now used as a cathedral.
