Schwesternhaus Störmede (bei Geseke)

School, community hall

The Schwesternhaus Störmede, formerly known as Nazareth Monastery, is a historic sacred building located in the Soest region of North Rhine-Westphalia. As a former Augustinian convent, it boasts a rich history and is currently protected as a listed building.

History+

The establishment of Nazareth Monastery dates back to 1483. Philipp von Hörde initiated the construction of the monastic complex and its church starting in 1486. The monastery was dedicated to the patron saints Anna and Augustine, which is why it was also known as Annenkloster. In 1583, during the Truchsessian War, the nuns were temporarily expelled, and Calvinist services were introduced. Following the victory of Elector Ernst von Bayern, Catholic religious practice was reinstated. In 1683, the community placed itself under the Augustinian monastery of Ewig. A new church, constructed from Rüthen sandstone, was subsequently built, though it was not fully completed until 1722. A new barn was erected in the 17th century, followed by a rectory and other farm buildings in the 18th century. Two new gatehouses were added in 1733. As part of the secularization in the Duchy of Westphalia, the monastery was dissolved on October 14, 1804.
