Schwesternklause

The monastery, also known as St. Klara Convent, was founded before 1466 as a settlement of the Franciscan Tertiaries, with initial mentions dating back to the mid-15th century. It provided a livelihood for many women from the rural surroundings. The nuns lived in poverty and supported themselves by selling handmade candles and devotional items. The core of the current building dates back to a new construction between 1557 and 1559. Between 1671 and 1680, the building underwent reconstruction and partial renovation by Brother Christoph. The convent's house chapel, Santa Maria di Loreto, was consecrated in 1680. As part of the Josephine reforms, the monastery was dissolved in 1782.

The Schwesternklause is situated at Gut-Beth-Platz in the historic old town of Bad Waldsee. It is located directly on the former city fortifications, south of the Gut-Beth-Brunnen and the Vogthaus. Towards Schloßsee, the building borders Bleichestraße, behind which the Steinach river flows.

The three-story, plastered solid building with a gabled roof and a single-axis northern extension is built against the city wall on its south side. The eastern part features an elaborately designed north facade. The convent building is typical for small urban Franciscan nun settlements and was closely associated with the neighboring Augustinian Canons Regular monastery. Part of the building today serves, among other things, as a Catholic parish office.
