Seeauer Castle

The former small castle and free seat was first mentioned in 1430 and presumably built by the Lords of Seeau.

Over the centuries, the building underwent numerous changes and expansions. From a fortified noble residence, it developed into an impressive manor house, which served various aristocratic families as a prestigious residence.

Architectural Features and Style Epochs

The architecture of the building reflects the respective style epochs. While the original structure still shows elements of late Gothic, later additions and renovations are characterized by Renaissance and Baroque influences.

• 15th Century: Late Gothic foundation walls and parts of the defensive structures.
• 16th Century: Renaissance-style extensions, including a new wing and decorative elements.
• 18th Century: Baroque redesign of the facade and interior, addition of a grand staircase.

The Lords of Seeau (15th - 16th Century)

As the first documented owners, the Lords of Seeau laid the foundation for the complex. Under their patronage, the building served primarily as a defensive structure and administrative center for their estates.

The Counts of Wartenberg (17th - 18th Century)

The Counts of Wartenberg acquired the property in the 17th century and transformed it into a representative Baroque residence. They commissioned extensive renovations and additions that gave the building its present appearance.

The Family von Hohenfels (19th - 20th Century)

In the 19th century, the building came into the possession of the family von Hohenfels, who used it as a summer residence. They preserved the historical substance and initiated minor modernizations.

Today, the historic building serves as a museum and event location. Visitors can explore the richly furnished rooms, learn about the history of the building and its former inhabitants, and attend various cultural events.

The museum houses an extensive collection of historical artifacts, furniture, and artworks that provide insight into the life of the nobility in past centuries.
