Nazi Beach Resort Prora

The seaside resort of Prora is an impressive complex of military buildings on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Originally planned as a gigantic holiday resort, the complex today bears witness to a turbulent history and is a striking monument of 20th-century architecture.
History+
The construction of the Prora seaside resort took place between 1935 and 1939 as an ambitious project of the National Socialist organization "Kraft durch Freude" (KdF). The aim was to enable 20,000 people to vacation simultaneously. However, with the outbreak of World War II, construction ceased, and the complex remained unfinished. After the war, the Red Army used parts of the complex and conducted demolition exercises. Later, from 1956, Prora served as a barracks and training facility for the Kasernierte Volkspolizei and later the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR. After German reunification in 1990, the Bundeswehr took over the facility but abandoned it in 1992. Since 1993, Prora has been publicly accessible and is a protected monument.

Prora is located on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, approximately 9 meters above sea level, in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The building complex stretches for several kilometers along the coast between the towns of Sassnitz and Binz.
