Sidon Castle

The remains of the fortress can be visited

Sidon's Sea Castle stands on a small island off the coast of the port city of Sidon in South Lebanon.

History+

In the 13th century, Crusaders built this fortress on an island that may have previously housed a temple to the Phoenician god Melqart. The island was connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, approximately 80 meters long. The castle repeatedly suffered destruction and reconstruction due to wars and conquests. When the Mamluks took the city from the Crusaders, they partially destroyed the fortress but subsequently rebuilt it and extended the causeway. In the 17th century, the castle was also restored under Emir Fakhreddine II, but again suffered severe damage.
