Servitenkloster Loretto

Church

The Servite Monastery Loretto, a significant sacred building, is located in the municipality of Loretto in Burgenland, Austria. It is known for its pilgrimage church of the Immaculate Conception, which was elevated to a Minor Basilica in 1997 and has a rich history as a place of pilgrimage.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to the 15th century, when a St. John's Chapel existed, but it was destroyed by the Turks in 1529. Around 1644, the landlord Rudolf von Stotzingen had a new chapel built on this site, modeled after the Loretto Chapel in Vienna. He also donated a miraculous image resembling the Black Madonna of Loreto in Italy. Under Franz Nádasdy, the foundation stone for a monastery and a church was laid in 1651 according to plans by Anton Riebler. The Chapel of Grace was moved to its current location in 1659, and the church was consecrated. After a fire in 1683, Prince Paul Esterházy had the church rebuilt, and it was reconsecrated in 1707. Between 1738 and 1740, the church received a two-tower facade. In 1787, the monastery was dissolved and pilgrimages were forbidden, but they revived in the 19th century. From 1926 to 1956, the monastery was again inhabited by the Servite Order.
