Shrewsbury Castle

Museum

Over the English town of Shrewsbury stands Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone structure. Its strategic location on a hill, encircled by a loop of the River Severn, once rendered it a defensive stronghold for the town.

History+

The castle's origins date back shortly after the Norman invasion, when Roger de Montgomery commissioned its construction around 1070. The castle acquired its current appearance in the 13th century. It primarily served to secure the town on the flank not protected by the river. From here, the town walls once extended, enclosing Shrewsbury.

Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated to the Shropshire Regiment. It is owned by the Unitary Authority Shropshire and is accessible to visitors.
