Slavova Fortress
The Slavova Fortress, a historical structure of national importance, is located one kilometer south of the town of Melnik on the Sveti Nikola Hill. This medieval fortification is closely linked to the region's history and bears the name of its former remodeler.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to the 11th century. However, it owes its current name to Alexius Slav, who extensively rebuilt and strengthened the complex between 1215 and 1218. During the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II, the Slavova Fortress played a significant role when Melnik served as the residence of the boyar Drago. The fortress was eventually destroyed during the Ottoman conquest.

The Slavova Fortress is located in Bulgaria, near the town of Melnik in the Sandanski district, within the Blagoevgrad region. It stands at an elevation of approximately 456 meters above sea level.

Today, only remnants of the Slavova Fortress remain, which can be visited. A section of the eastern wall still stands, reaching a height of up to ten meters in some places. Excavations have also uncovered fragments of the southern and western walls, as well as ceramic finds. A large part of the fortress now lies beneath the ruins of the Sveti Nikola Church.
