Assumburg castle is located in Heemskerk, North Holland. It originated in the 13th Century and was inhabited by the family of Velsen. 1328 bought Barthoud van Assendelft the castle. After that, the castle came to Assendelft family. 1694 Jean Deutz bought the castle. After 1867 the castle remained uninhabited. It served as a hospital hereinafter referred to as 1881 and later as a school. During the war from 1940 to 1945, the Germans occupied the castle. After the war it served some time as a detention center for political prisoners. Today it is privately owned.
