Slot Moermond (Castle)

The origins of Slot Moermond date back to 1229, when Costijn van Zierikzee had a first castle complex built on this site. This oval moated castle, measuring almost sixty meters in circumference and featuring five towers, was fortified with walls over one and a half meters thick, and almost two meters at the gates. In 1244, it served as a residence for Count Willem II of Holland, but it was destroyed in 1297 after months of siege by Wolfart I of Borsselen. In the first half of the 14th century, a second, smaller castle was built on the same site, using stones from the previous structure. Little is known about its exact demise, but by 1500, it likely existed only as a ruin. Its foundations were excavated in 1956 and are visible today.
