Sonnenburg Manor
The Sonnenburggut in Schaffhausen, a stately country estate that acquired its current form in the 16th century, is an outstanding example of the development from a modest property to a representative manor house. Its history is closely linked to important Schaffhausen patrician families who shaped and expanded the estate.
History+
The first documented mention of the Sonnenburggut dates back to 1589, when the originally simple buildings were transformed into a castle-like country estate in the Renaissance style. The estate underwent another significant phase of embellishment in 1676. At that time, the magnificent Baroque interiors were created, featuring stucco work by Samuel Höscheller and elaborate tiled stoves by David Pfau. Over the centuries, the property changed hands several times and was owned by prominent Schaffhausen patrician families such as the Peyer (im Hof), Stokar, and Peyer (mit den Wecken) families. In 1869, the Sonnenburggut passed to the industrialist Johann Conrad Neher through marriage. His son established a landscape nursery and tree farm on the grounds between 1870 and 1885.
