The Sparrenburg, a fortress, is on the Sparrenberg in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is considered a landmark of the city and an example of a restored spur castle in Germany.

History+

The origins of the Sparrenburg date back to before 1250, when it was built by the Counts of Ravensberg. Its main tasks were to secure the Bielefeld Pass, protect the city of Bielefeld, founded around 1200, and serve as a princely residence. In 1346, the castle passed to the Counts of Jülich-Berg through marriage, losing its function as a princely residence, although Emperor Charles IV stayed overnight here in 1377. Between 1410 and 1428, it served for the last time as a princely residence for Count Wilhelm II of Ravensberg. In the 16th century, the castle was expanded into a modern fortress to meet new military requirements due to firearms. Italian fortress builders like Alessandro Pasqualini contributed to this transformation.
