The Springer-Schlössl, an estate in Vienna-Meidling, has connections to personalities and a past. Originally conceived as a private country residence, its history ranges from aristocratic ownership to expropriation and its current use.

History+

The park area where the Springer-Schlössl stands was originally owned by Baron Carl von Hügel, the head gardener of the Schönbrunn Palace Park. Hügel designed both parks in parallel, and his horticultural skill is still evident in 170 natural monuments within the Springer-Schlössl park. In 1887, Baron Gustav von Springer acquired the property from the Hügel family and commissioned the architectural firm Fellner & Helmer to build the castle. After Springer's death, ownership passed in 1920 to his daughter Marie, who was married to Baron Elie de Rothschild. She used the estate only occasionally and emigrated to France in 1936.
