Adelheidisstift (Vilich)

The nobleman Megingoz von Geldern and his wife Gerberga founded the abbey in the late 10th century. After the death of their son Gottfried in 977, they decided to establish a private women's collegiate church in Vilich from his inheritance, dedicated to Saints Cornelius and Cyprian. From 978 onwards, the abbey buildings were constructed around an existing chapel from the 8th or 9th century. Their daughter Adelheid, previously a canoness at St. Ursula's Abbey in Cologne, became the first abbess. In January 987, King Otto III placed the abbey under his direct rule, making it one of only four imperial abbeys and granting it privileges such as ecclesiastical immunity and the free election of the abbess. Adelheid later transformed the collegiate church into a Benedictine monastery, confirmed by Pope Gregory V in 996. Under her successor Mathilde, daughter of Count Palatine Ezzo, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity, during which the collegiate church of St. Peter was built starting in 1020. In the 12th century, the stricter monastic rule was abandoned in favor of the simpler collegiate constitution, and in the 13th century, the Archbishops of Cologne regained supervision. The abbey suffered destruction during the Truchsessian and Thirty Years' Wars but was rebuilt in the 1640s.

The St. Adelheidis Abbey is situated in the city of Bonn, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 59 meters above sea level.

The historic complex is currently utilized as a senior citizens' residence and is protected as an architectural monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
