St. Alexander und Theodor

The origins of the church date back to the foundation of the monastery in 764. After several previous buildings, which were erected and partially destroyed over the centuries, the construction of the current Baroque church began in 1737. The magnificent church, dedicated to Saints Theodor Tiro and Alexander of Rome, was completed in 1766. In the course of secularization in 1802, the imperial abbey was dissolved, and the church became the property of the Electorate of Bavaria. Despite these changes, monastic life in Ottobeuren was able to continue under difficult conditions. In 1926, Pope Pius XI bestowed the honorary title of Basilica minor upon the church.

The Cathedral of St. Alexander and Theodor stands on a gently rising ridge west of the market square of Ottobeuren in the district of Unterallgäu, Bavaria. Its striking appearance is visible far across the valley of the Western Günz.

Today, the church is a listed building in Bavaria and continues to serve as a place of worship. It is known for its late Baroque furnishings and the Ottobeuren Concerts held here.
