Mariakron Abbey

The monastery's history began around 1469/70 with the endowment of a house for sisters by Stralsund's mayor Otto Voge. An initial chapel was consecrated in May 1470, and the founder was buried there in 1475. Through further donations from Stralsund citizens, the foundation grew over time. The chapel visible today was built at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1560, the foundation was renamed St. Annen und Brigitten after receiving lands from the dissolved Brigittenkloster. During this period, it served as a residence for destitute widows and unmarried women. Between 1840 and 1842, repair work was carried out on the dilapidated chapel, and in 1842, an organ by Carl August Buchholz was installed. From 1948 to 1988, the chapel was used by the New Apostolic Congregation of Stralsund. Extensive renovations of the building complex took place from 2003 to 2004 and again from 2005 to 2008.

The monastery of St. Annen und Brigitten is located in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, within the Vorpommern-Rügen region.

The former foundation buildings now house parts of the city administration. The chapel itself is used as a venue for events and weddings and is accessible to visitors.
