St. Anthony Church (Rrënojat e Kishës së Shën Ndojt)

The ruins of St. Anthony's Church, also known as Rrënojat e Kishës së Shën Ndojt, represent a significant sacred building on Cape Rodon in Albania. Located in the Durrës district, the site was declared a cultural monument in 1963 and bears witness to a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages.
History+
St. Anthony's Church was one of the most frequented churches in the region during the Albanian Middle Ages. Its importance grew in the 15th century with the construction of Skanderbeg Castle in close proximity, indirectly leading to its designation as Skanderbeg Church. Documents from 1418 suggest that the church was originally associated with a Byzantine monastery dedicated to St. Mary, located nearby. The architectural style combined Romanesque and Gothic elements. Later records from 1599 confirm that the monastery belonged to the Franciscans at that time and was dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. Both the church and monastery were in operation until their destruction by an earthquake in 1852. The ruins remained until 1978, before the church and parts of the monastery were rebuilt by 2000. It is believed that Andrea II Muzaka and Euphemia Mataranga were married here around 1328 and later buried.
