Basilica of the Holy Apostles

The origins of St. Apostles date back to the 10th century, when a collegiate church was founded on this site, with its first Apostles' Church being a rather simple structure. A significant new construction took place at the beginning of the 11th century, either under Archbishop Heribert or his successor Pilgrim, whose burial place is found in the west choir. This so-called "Pilgrim building" was unusually oriented to the west, similar to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and established the basic dimensions of the current church. Substantial parts of the outer walls of the nave and the western transept, as well as parts of the central nave walls, still date from this period, although the outer cladding has been renewed multiple times. Around 1230, the original wooden ceilings were replaced by stone vaults. The strict adherence to a fixed system of measurements and the polar juxtaposition of building components characterize German Romanesque architecture of this era.

St. Apostles is located in Cologne, a major city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The church is centrally situated in the city center between Hahnenstraße and Mittelstraße, near Neumarkt.

Today, St. Apostles is a Roman Catholic church and a protected architectural monument. Its elaborately designed trefoil choir with two flanking east towers and the tall west tower define its appearance. A short octagonal crossing tower with a lantern surmounts the trefoil choir.
