St. Barnabas Monastery
The St. Barnabas Monastery in Cyprus is dedicated to the Cypriot national saint, Barnabas. It is located not far from the ancient sites of Enkomi and Salamina and now houses a museum.
History+
The origins of the monastery date back to 477 AD. The current monastery church, built upon an earlier 10th-century structure, was completed in 1756 under the direction of Archbishop Philotheos. After the last monks left the monastery in 1976, the complex was repurposed. The monastery church has since served as an icon museum, while the former monastery buildings house an archaeological museum. This museum displays a collection of ceramics, mainly from the nearby ancient cities of Enkomi and Salamina.
