St.-Blasien Abbey

The founding of St. Blasien Monastery around 1100 was based on the wish of Count Otto of Northeim, which was only realized by his sons after his death. Initially conceived as a collegiate church, it soon transformed into a Benedictine monastery. Its location at the intersection of two trade routes fostered the development of a market settlement, which became the nucleus of the town of Northeim, granted town rights in 1252. In the 15th century, Johannes Dederoth, a monk from Reinhäuser, influenced the monastery's affairs. He later reformed Bursfelde Monastery and initiated the founding of the Bursfelde Congregation. After resistance from the order's brothers, St. Blasien Monastery joined this reform movement in 1464, which aimed at renewing Benedictine liturgy.
