St. Emmeram (Spalt)

The origins of St. Emmeram monastery date back to 792, when the monastic community of St. Salvator existed in Spalt, subordinate to St. Emmeram monastery in Regensburg. In 1037, it was transformed into a collegiate chapter, initiated by Adelheid, mother of Conrad II, and Regensburg Bishop Gebhard III. Another significant development was the founding of St. Nikolaus chapter in 1295 by the Bishop of Eichstätt and Burgrave Konrad of Nuremberg, which initially shared the basilica of St. Emmeram. St. Emmeram was less well-endowed financially than the newer St. Nikolaus chapter. In the 16th century, the chapter experienced a decline, with most of its possessions lost during the Reformation. In 1619, it was finally united with St. Nikolaus chapter. The united chapters were dissolved between 1804 and 1806 as part of the secularization.

The former monastery of St. Emmeram is located in the town of Spalt in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany.

The former collegiate church of St. Emmeram now serves as a parish church. Inside, it houses the Spalter Madonna, a late Gothic, polychrome Madonna figure from 1519. The church's organ was built in 1982 by Mathis & Söhne and features 25 stops across two manuals and pedal.
