Kloster Ichtershausen

Protestant parish church

The former St. Georg monastery in Ichtershausen, located in the Ilm-Kreis district of Thuringia, was once a significant Cistercian nunnery and is now considered a cultural monument of Thuringia. The complex, whose origins date back to the 12th century, stands as a testament to medieval monastic architecture and regional history.

History+

The history of St. Georg monastery began in 1147 with the conversion of an existing church into a monastic institution. It was founded under the patronage of Saints Georg, Maria, and Benedict. During the Middle Ages, this Cistercian nunnery grew to become one of the largest and wealthiest establishments in Thuringia, possessing extensive lands and a large convent. The monastic era concluded around 1530 during the Reformation, when the monastery was dissolved and its church transformed into an evangelical parish church. A fire in 1602 damaged parts of the north nave, with restoration efforts extending until 1721. In 1198, Philip of Swabia was designated German King here. Later, in 1546, the Protestant princes of the Schmalkaldic League convened at this site.
