St. George Church, also known as the Rotunda Sveti Georgi, is a remarkable early Christian place of worship and one of the oldest structures in Sofia. It is situated amidst the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Serdica and is particularly renowned for its impressive frescoes.
History+
This significant sacred building was constructed by the Romans in the 4th century. It is believed that the church was built on the foundations of a former pagan temple. Over the centuries, several layers of frescoes were applied inside the central dome. The oldest of these murals date back to the 10th century, while other notable frescoes from the 12th to 14th centuries adorn the dome.
