Saint Hilarion Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

St. Hilarion Castle, one of the best-preserved fortress ruins in Northern Cyprus, majestically crowns a rocky outcrop near Kyrenia. It stands as an outstanding example of medieval military architecture, offering expansive views over the landscape.

History+

The castle's origins trace back to the 9th or 10th century when a monastery dedicated to the hermit St. Hilarion was built on the mountain. Around 1100, this monastery was integrated into a fortress complex. In 1191, Guy of Lusignan besieged the castle on behalf of Richard the Lionheart. Later, in the 13th century, St. Hilarion became involved in conflicts with Emperor Frederick II. John of Ibelin, guardian of the young King Henri I, had the castle reinforced and used it as a refuge. After 1232, the Lusignans expanded the complex into their summer residence, naming it “Dieu d'Amour.” The castle also played a role during the Genoese invasion of Cyprus in 1373. Following the death of Peter I in 1369, succession disputes arose, during which John of Antioch fled to the castle and was murdered there in 1374. A final expansion occurred around 1391, but in the early 16th century, the fortress was razed by the Venetians.
