Sankt Johannes der Täufer

The monastery of St. Johannes was founded in 1372. It was a noble collegiate foundation dedicated to John the Baptist. For several centuries, it shaped the religious and cultural life of the region. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved and secularized in 1542, thus ending its function as a spiritual institution.

The former monastery is situated in Hilpoltstein, a town in the Middle Franconian district of Roth in Bavaria, Germany. Its geographical location places it in a historically significant region.

The former monastery church is now the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johannes the Baptist. It is listed as an architectural monument in the Bavarian Monument List and belongs to the Hilpoltstein parish association within the Diocese of Eichstätt. The building, whose core is late Gothic, was redesigned in the Baroque style and re-consecrated in 1735. Inside, there are ceiling frescoes by Melchior Puchner and stucco work by Jeronimo Andrioli. The choir features ceiling paintings by Matthias Zink. A new organ was installed in 2017.
